Mascouten Adopt-A-Spot  in West Lafayette

This adopts-a-spot was developed by the master gardeners in cooperation with the Park Department of  West Lafayette in the early 90's.   It is located on the east side of River Road at its junction with  Happy Hollow Road, on the river side of the road as you are going north on Indiana 43.   It is at the south end of Mascouten Park, it is slowly being converted to predominately perennial  materials, however we do plant some annuals for a splash of color at various points in the spot.  In the spring it features a blooming Crabapple tree and two Red Buds, as well as being bounded by a border of daffodils.  Then there are number of grasses to help  accentuate different parts of the spot which becomes a large part of the display for winter.

Opportunities for volunteer work  happen several times during the year.  In the spring we have "cutting the grasses and cleanup day" and if mulch is available we spread it at the same time.  Then there is an "annual planting day" sometime in May.  Than during the fall we generally have a couple cleanup days to clear out the annual materials, as well as getting it ready for the winter season.  During the summer there is opportunities for volunteer time working as the "gardener for the week" .  Master gardeners can sign up for a week of taking care of the adopt-a- spot during the growing season. Responsibility for this task include, picking up any trash that has blown in to the spot, weeding, deadheading if we are in the blooming season,  carrying water and watering as needed if there is a drought spell during the summer.  The work and be done any time during the week assigned,  and as much work as a volunteer wants to put in during their week.  There's always work to be done.
